Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
This position is responsible for the following: Other duties may be assigned.
- Perform electrical repair and maintenance such as assemble, install, test, or maintain electrical or electronic wiring, equipment, appliances, apparatus, or fixtures for ships, barges, equipment and facilities. May repair and install telephone systems.
- Install, test, and repair shipboard electrical, communication, and navigation systems.
- Strong troubleshooting skills to diagnose issues caused by the harsh marine environments.
- Troubleshoot and repair electrical components, systems, and equipment.
- Diagnose malfunctioning systems, apparatus, or components, using test equipment and hand tools to locate the cause of a breakdown and correct the problem.
- Advise supervision and/or Safety Department on whether continued operation of equipment could be hazardous.
- Determine the appropriate method and required equipment required for proper electrical repair.
- May be required to install conduits, run wire, and terminating.
- Place conduit, pipes, or tubing, inside designated partitions, walls, or other concealed areas, and pull insulated wires or cables through the conduit to complete circuits between boxes.
- May train workers to install, maintain, or repair electrical wiring, equipment, or fixtures when appropriate.
- Prepare sketches or follow blueprints to determine the location of wiring or equipment and to ensure conformance to building and safety codes.
- Able to operate shipboard switchgear.
- May assist during emergencies by operating floodlights or generators, placing flares, or driving needed vehicles.
Required Education & Experience:
- A minimum of a high school diploma or G.E.D. preferred.
- Experience/knowledge of electrical circuitry.
- Industrial and marine Electrical experience preferred.
- 1st Class: 3-5 years
- 2nd Class: 1-3 years
- Maintain current electrician's license to meet governmental regulations (if applicable).
Working Conditions:
- Some climbing (100 feet) and lifting (50 lbs.) involved.
- Traverse gangways and scaffolding at varying heights while wearing fall prevention equipment.
- Working with hot and sometimes hazardous materials.
- Aboard ships, both on and offshore as well as confined spaces.
- Must be able to stand and operate equipment for up to four continuous hours.
- The work requires long periods of sitting in awkward positions, standing on a variety of surfaces and at differing angles, bending over, crouching, and climbing up and over obstructions such as scaffolding, ladders, and internal barge and boat structural members.
- Operation of volt/ohm meter, amp meter, megger, and voltage recorder.

- Ability to read and interpret blueprints, sketches, drawings, and technical manuals (i.e.: electrical schematics.).
